In an effort to complete the research cycle in its training offerings, the Philippine Social Science Council is holding an Online Training Workshop on Basics of Doing Social Science Research, which is primarily focused on designing a research project. It will provide an overview of the basic concepts and the step-by-step process of social science research, beginning from identifying a research topic and formulating a research problem, up to constructing a research framework and selecting the appropriate methodology. The primary resource material is the 2018 publication, Doing Social Science Research: A Guidebook.
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Acquire knowledge about social science research as a means to investigate social phenomena;
- Articulate their knowledge and understanding of the different stages of the research process, especially in designing a research project; and
- Apply the appropriate approach/es and method/s to a chosen research topic.

MS. STELLA P. GO is currently the Convenor of the Philippine Migration Research Network (PMRN) of the Philippine Social Science Council and a member of the Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty of the Integrated School of De La Salle University, Manila. She is also currently the co-lead of the Policy, Advocacy and Research Technical Working Group of the Philippine Migrant Health Network (PMHN). She was an Associate Professor of the Behavioral Sciences Department of De La Salle University, Manila where she was also Chairperson. She is a founding member of the Pi Gamma Mu, Philippine Beta Chapter, an International Honor Society in the Social Sciences. Her main research interest centers around issues in international migration, including its psycho-social impacts on the family, its gender dimensions and migration governance. She has written and co-authored numerous publications, both locally and internationally on the topic of international migration. Over the years she has also served as Philippine country expert for various international agencies such as the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the International Labour Organisation (ILO), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and as resource person at various international meetings on international migration.

DR. ERNIEL B. BARRIOS is a Professor at the School of Statistics, University of the Philippines Diliman, where he also served as Dean from 2008-2014. He was an awardee of Gawad Chancellor sa Natatanging Guro (2010), recipient of One UP Professorial Chair (2019-2021), SEARCA Regional Professorial Chair in Statistics (2016-2017), UP Centennial Chair (since 2008), and UP Scientist (since 2009). His research interest focuses on computational statistics and nonparametric methods with applications in spatiotemporal modeling, time series models, and big data analytics, resulting in over 80 papers published mostly in statistics and computing journals. He supervised graduate research of over 140 students on various topics in computational statistics, nonparametric methods, robust statistics, time series and volatility models, and some statistical machine learning technologies (including natural language processing). He serves as associate editor of Communications in Statistical Applications and Methods published by Korean Statistical Society and Korean International Statistical Society and He was elected member of the International Statistical Institute in 2012 and a full member of Philippine American Academy of Science and Engineering since 2019. He is also a member of other organizations under ISI, Econometric Society, East Asian Economic Association, and the Philippine Statistical Association. He was newly elected to the board of directors for the International Association of Statistical Computing-Asian Regional Section for the period 2022-2025.

DR. JOSE R. LACSON, JR. is a Professorial Lecturer at the Department of Communication Research, College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines Diliman, where he was a Professor 5 from 1988 until retirement in 2014. He teaches at the Doctorate, Master’s, and Undergraduate levels. He teaches courses on Communication Research, Qualitative Research, Risk and Crisis Communication, Health Communication, Communication Planning, Communication/Information Technology, Communication Theory, Communication Campaigns, Monitoring and Evaluation Research Methods, and Filipino Communicative Behaviour (FCB). His research activities include the conduct of studies on various applied fields of communication using a wide range of research methods: image and perception studies, health communication studies, surveys, field experiments, evaluation research, content analysis, focus group discussion, focus interviews, behavioural surveillance, feasibility studies for broadcast, print and specialized media, social and market research for advertising and public relations, and political surveys. His extension work includes the conceptualization and conduct of training programs for various United Nations agencies, government institutions, and private companies on risk and crisis communication, communication planning and policy, research, communication campaigns, communication/information technology utilization as applied to various program concerns such as social mobilization, advocacy, IEC programs, sustainable development, environmental protection, population and family planning, health communication/promotion, behaviour change communication, lobbying, and social marketing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
This training workshop is open to beginning social science researchers, faculty, students, and practitioners. Training participants must already have a research topic in mind that they want to develop into a research project.
Training methods include a mix of lectures, open discussions, sharing of experiences, and workshop exercises. Participants are required to attend all sessions that will be held online via Zoom.
The training sessions are spread over a four-day, twenty-hour program. For the first two days, the sessions begin at 1:00 p.m. and end at 5:00 p.m. For the last two days, the sessions begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m., with a lunch break.
The fee is PhP8,000.00 per participant, inclusive of 12% VAT. PSSC accepts payment through bank deposit or transfer, and online (via PayPal or credit/debit card). Discounted rates are available for participants affiliated with PSSC member-associations and institutions, as well as for groups of at least three participants coming from the same institution or organization.
