In this new normal, the PSSC offers two online courses that aim to help social science faculty, researchers, and students continue with their research work using the new approaches and tools made available by the digital age. These courses are:
- Designing Online Surveys Using KoboToolbox (May 22, 24, 29 & 31, 2023)
- Doing Online Interviews & Focus Group Discussions (June 6, 7, 13 & 14, 2023)
At the end of each course, participants are expected to:
- Develop the capacity to design and plan a social scientific study using digital research methods; and
- Gain practical skills in conducting interviews, FGDs, and/or surveys online.

ONLINE COURSE
Designing Online Surveys
Using KoboToolbox
May 22, 24, 29 & 31, 2023
Duration: 16 hours of synchronous and asynchronous activities
In the new normal, the PSSC offers an online course that aims to help social science faculty, researchers, and students do research work using new approaches, methods, and tools made available by the digital age, particularly online surveys. The course will also use KoboToolbox, a free and open-source platform for the collection, management, and visualization of data.
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Articulate fundamental concepts of online survey as a data collection tool
- Assess the effectiveness of online survey as a tool for data collection
- Design and develop a questionnaire for online survey
- Apply different KoboToolbox features as is appropriate in designing and deploying an online survey questionnaire
- Assess the effectiveness of KoboToolbox as a platform for designing, deploying, and managing an online survey

In the new normal, the PSSC offers an online course that aims to help social science faculty, researchers, and students do research work using new approaches, methods, and tools made available by the digital age, particularly online interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) for qualitative research. The course will introduce participants to the art and science of designing instruments up to the preparation for and implementation of interviews and FGDs in digital spaces.
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Articulate fundamental concepts of online interviewing and FGD as tools for data gathering in qualitative research
- Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of online interviews and FGDs as research tools
- Develop effective interview and FGD instruments based on a research question
- Gain practical skills in preparing for and implementing online interviews and FGDs

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
The courses are open to all social science researchers, faculty, students, and practitioners interested in doing research using digital approaches, specifically online interviews, online FGDs, and/or online surveys.
The courses will be conducted in a blended format. Synchronous sessions (lectures, discussion, and hands-on activities) will be held in Zoom while asynchronous assignments (hands-on exercises) will be hosted in the PSSC e-Learning Academy (Moodle). Participants are expected to attend all Zoom sessions of their respective course/s.
Yes. Each participant may join one or both courses.
For each course, the training sessions are spread across two weeks. Each week will have two three-hour synchronous sessions and two-hours worth of asynchronous activities. The total duration for each course is 16 hours.
Yes. For each course completed, participants will receive an e-Certificate of Completion upon accomplishing an online evaluation form. Printed certificates will be issued upon request.
